True Kelly Green

You were in like Flynn last night at Michael's if your name happened to be Kelly. But even if your surname doesn't match that of the city's current police commissioner (seen at left with his wife, Veronica) the camaraderie and goodwill at the sixth-annual Kelly Gang benefit were still in plentiful supply. What started life as a whimsically named group of media mavens who enjoyed lunching together and who happened to share the last name Kelly has become a full-fledged charity. Members including novelist Tom Kelly, New York Post "Media Ink" columnist Keith Kelly, Time Inc. managing editor Jim Kelly and House Beautiful publisher Kate Kelly Smith were inspired to take their mealtime gatherings to another level when one of their own, Michael Kelly of the New Yorker, became the first journalist to die in the Iraq war, in 2003. The following year, the surviving Kellys held a buffet dinner to raise money to help put the fallen reporter's sons through college. In the time since, the Kelly Gang has contributed to a variety of worthy causes, this year's beneficiary being the Doe Fund, which campaigns to end homelessness by putting New York's neediest to work cleaning the streets of the city. The kitchen at Michael's, normally known for its salmon sashimi and hanger steak salad, stepped up to the plate with an array of Irish dishes, including (of course) corned beef and cabbage. We'd expect nothing less from a restaurant owner whose last name is McCarty.

Fare Thee Well, New York Post?

If Vanity Fair journalist and author Michael Wolff (The Man Who Owns The News) is correct, the New York Post may not be long for this world. At least, not as a Rupert Murdoch publication. Addressing the New York Press Club last night, Wolff predicted that once Murdoch buys the New York Times! (which, says Wolff, is all-but inevitable as the Gray Lady teeters on the edge of financial ruin), the Australian newspaperman will lose interest in the Post, which bleeds his News Corp of millions of dollars every year. Murdoch's shedding of the paper famed for headlines such as "Topless Woman in Headless Bar" may well prove to be the paper's death knell, forecasts Wolff, who believes, if anything, the tabloid will be folded into the Daily News. As for the city's paper of record, Wolff called the Times slushy and in need of an owner who can re-energize it. He believes that a Murdoch buyout of the NYT would save the periodical from its current state of wayward irrelevance. Wow. Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times in the hands of one man? Unimaginable. But, in Wolff's belief, unavoidable and not such a bad thing. Stay tuned.

Calling All Kellys

woody.jpg In honor of St. Patrick's Day, New York media mecca Michael's will be buzzing with good Irish cheer tonight, at the fifth annual Kelly Gang Benefit. Among the many Kellys expected include Keith Kelly of the New York Post, NFL hall-of-famer Jim Kelly, New York City police commisioner Ray Kelly, novelist Tom Kelly, Ed Kelly of American Express, Time Inc.'s managing editor, Jim Kelly, and House Beautiful publisher Kate Kelly Smith. No word on whether Kelly Ripa will make an appearance. The dinner fete will raise money for Hunter's Hope, a charity dedicated to fighting Krabbe's Disease, the genetic blood disorder that claimed the life of eight-year-old Hunter Kelly, son of footballer Jim Kelly, in 2005. Having so many Kellys in one place would have been a dream come true for Woody Boyd , the television bartender who famously composed the "Kelly Song." He and others would be "cheered" to know, however, that one needn't be a Kelly—or even Irish—to attend. Walk-in ticket buyers are welcome, starting at 6:30 p.m.
